What is fencing?
Fencing is a combat sport where two athletes will face each other and attempt to hit each other in the valid target area. There are three weapons in modern fencing, each of which have their own rules and valid target area. [Words about historical fencing here]

Foil
The foil is the modern-day equivalent of the dueling sword. It is a thrusting weapon where hits can be made only with the tip of the blade. The target area is the only the torso, so fencers must wear a metallic jacket to signal hits with the scoring apparatus. Foil is the most technical and precise of the three weapons due to its target area.
Epee
Epee is the modern version of the historical dueling sword. Like foil, it is a thrusting weapon where hits can only be made with the tip of the blade. The epee is heavier than the foil and has a wider guard to protect the hand. The valid target area of epee is the whole body, and epee fencers are both strategic and patient.
Sabre
Taking its roots from the cavalry sword, the sabre is a cutting weapon where a hit can be made to an opponent with the entire blade. Sabre is the fastest and most explosive of the three weapons, and bouts can end very quickly. Sabre fencers wear a metallic jacket and mask so that hits can be signaled to the scoring machine.
Historical Fencing
Historical fencing is the Art & Science of the Sword in its most traditional way: as a tool for personal combat & self defence. Historical Fencing teaches one to manage risk to safeguard one's life at all costs. In order to do so, one can use off hand, disarm & commanding techniques, as well as unique footwork not limited by the boundaries of a modern fencing strip.
